DigitalBridge removes A.G. letter from Web site: Flap ? The note bore the state seal, which may violate Utah law

Nov 27, 2008 (The Salt Lake Tribune - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) --
AN OREM COMPANY -- touted by Attorney General Mark Shurtleff to fellow A.G.s around the nation -- has removed his letter of praise from its Web site amid scrutiny over Shurtleff's use of letterhead bearing the state seal.

While elected executive officeholders have wide latitude to utilize official letterhead, state rules prohibit use of the state seal on "any advertising or promotion of any product, business, organization, service or article whether offered for sale, for profit or without charge."

Lt. Gov. Gary Herbert -- responsible for guarding the official emblem -- intends to send a letter to Shurtleff next week, asking him to explain this instance.

In 2006, Shurtleff acknowledged a mistake when he endorsed a Beaver County candidate and included the official seal, a violation of the rules. But this time, Shurtleff insists he was performing his official duties to share information with colleagues about new technology that can help prevent identity theft.

DigitalBridge did not return calls Wednesday. Spokepersons for both the lieutenant governor and the attorney general said their offices did not initiate the letter's removal from www.digitalbridge.com.

Last week, DigitalBridge spokeswoman Melanie Dougherty said the company was "very proud" of Shurtleff's letter of support and saw no reason to delete it from their online information.

"We haven't, and are not giving directives to anyone," said Herbert's spokesman Joe Demma late
Wednesday. "We're still drafting our letter to Shurtleff."
Shurtleff's spokesman Paul Murphy had a similar response.
"I haven't had any discussions with DigitalBridge," Murphy said. "Whatever their decision, they should be the ones to talk about it."

  • Understanding the Voice of the Customer: Today's contact centers involve a sea of information that must be captured, processed, and distributed on a daily basis. Effective use of this information enables companies to remain competitive in an increasingly aggressive and customer centric marketplace. An overwhelming percentage of the information that circulates in a contact center's audio recordings, documents, web pages, and emails is unstructured in that it resides outside of a normal structured database and cannot be managed efficiently. These unstructured items contain valuable information, yet this information historically has been difficult to organize, categorize, and access.
