1&1 Internet Ltd: 1&1 Internet opts for Open Source Business Foundation membership; Business success with open source solutions

(M2 PressWIRE Via Acquire Media NewsEdge)
RDATE:21052008

London -- 1&1 Internet Ltd, the world's leading web host, has joined
Open Source Business Foundation e.V. - (OSBF). Seated in Nuremberg,
Germany, Open Source Business Foundation is a European network of the
open source sector and already has more than 120 members - innovative
companies as well as scientific institutes and public-sector bodies.
"Open source solutions played and continue to play a formative part in
business developments at our company", says Achim Weiss, CTO of 1&1.
"The professional use of open source early on has clearly given us
competitive advantages". Today, 1&1 is a market leading web host
worldwide. Through its membership and engagement in Open Source
Business Foundation, 1&1 seeks to actively promote acceptance of open
source solutions in companies and to profit from cooperation with other
open source developers.

OSBF's latest member, 1&1, demonstrates how strongly the deployment of
open source solutions can propel business success, as the success of
1&1 has been linked to open source developments from the outset. Over
90 percent of the three million and more private and business websites
hosted with 1&1 today are based on open source technology. More than
40,000 servers at 1&1's data centres in Europe and the US operate on
Linux. The company employs about 400 developers and programmers, and a
large number of the 3,515 jobs depend directly or indirectly on open
source. By the same token, developments are redistributed back into the
community, where they are made available to all companies and
programmers on a cost-free basis. One example of open source projects
initiated by 1&1 is www.qooxdoo.org an Ajax framework that focuses on
graphical user interfaces and includes support for professional
JavaScript development via a state-of-the-art GUI toolkit and
high-level client-server communication.

About Open Source Business Foundation e.V. (OSBF)

Open Source Business Foundation e.V. (OSBF), an association
headquartered in Nuremberg, is a European network of companies,
institutions and individuals whose shared interests lie in open source
development and business models. For business founders and established
companies from all over Europe, OSBF is a business platform that not
only offers them contacts but also supports and promotes their business
ideas. What makes OSFB so special is that it looks at open source
literally from the business viewpoint. In its wide-ranging activities,
OSFB always has its focus on the commercial use of open source
software. Part of the secret of OSFB's success is that it networks
software and service companies, coaches, growth capital providers and
universities throughout Europe and involves all OSFB members in
concrete projects.

OSBF's eminent activities include the annual Open Source Business Award
(OSBA), which carries a total of EUR 75,000, for open source software
and business concepts that are innovative at European level. Other
important OSBF activities include Collaborative Open Source Application
Development (COSAD) as a best practice consortium for software
development; the Embedded Open Source Cluster Initiative (EOSCI), in
which scientists of the Embedded Systems Institute (ESI) of the
University of Erlangen-Nuremberg cooperate closely with industry; the
congress Open Source Meets Business (OSMB); Open Source @ Work, a
marketing-event platform available to OSBF members; and the Foundation
coaches, almost two dozen highly qualified and specialised managers and
consultants who allow member companies to participate in their

extensive experience, on a part-time basis and free of charge.

Open Source Business Foundation was established at the end of 2007 as
the successor organisation of Linux Business Campus Nurnberg e.V.,
established in 2006. Today, OSBF already has 120 members from all over
Germany, Europe and from the USA. In addition to numerous small and
medium-sized enterprises and large caps - ranging from Agnitas to
Zimory, from SerNet to Novell and Red Hat, from Microsoft to Deutsche
Post and Deutschen Telekom - the membership also includes various
institutions such as the Carl von Ossietzky University in Oldenburg,
the Fraunhofer Institute for Integrated Circuits (IIS), the Free
University Berlin, the Friedrich-Alexander University
Erlangen-Nuremberg, the Chamber of Industry and Commerce for Nuremberg
and Central Franconia, and the City of Nuremberg.
